Major research projects presently being carried out in BioMedical Genomics Centre are as follows:

  • Genomic and Epigenomic analyses of Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in the Indian population
  • Genomic characterisation of Skin surface Microbiome across different skin types in Humans
  • Metagenomic Characterisation of the Cutaneous Microbiome Associated with Major Immunogenetic Subtypes of Psoriasis in India
  • Diabetic Foot Ulcer Microbiome Contribution in Biofilm formation, Antibiotic Resistance and Wound healing
  • The Kalyani Cohort Study – a longitudinal study of health and disease in a peri-urban population in eastern India
  • Hospital-based epidemiology of congenital heart disease in Kolkata and the molecular basis of nonsyndromic Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF)
  • Genetic Variations in the Toll-Like Receptor Genes in Visceral Leishmaniasis and Post Kala-azar Dermal Leishmaniasis Patients from Eastern India
  • Deregulation of micro RNA in cell and animal models of Huntington’s disease role of altered micro RNA in neuronal differentiation and cell cycle regulation

Infrastructure for laboratory space to provide genetic services is being developed. We are in the process of developing actionable genetic tests for monogenic diseases like β Thalassaemia, HbE trait, Achondroplasia, TPMT Mutations, Spinal Muscular Atrophy etc. Currently some of these tests are being carried out in research mode as recommended by clinicians of SSKM Hospital. We shall apply for National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accreditation and once granted shall provide diagnostic services.
